Basic Education

Basic & Literacy Classes

The Adult Learning Center offers basic classes for adults who left school early and need to reinforce basic skills.

For literacy students who need one-on-one instruction with a tutor, every effort will be made to connect the students with a tutor, either through volunteers from the community or through the Pickens Literacy Association.

All students wishing to enter the Basic class are required to complete an initial assessment and attend an orientation session before beginning the class.

  • On August 16-18, day students can register at 9 am and should be prepared to stay approximately 3 hours for an assessment.
  • Evening students can register August 16 and 18th at 4 pm, and should also plan to stay 3 hours.
  • Beginning August 23, 2016, students can register and complete the assessment on Tuesday mornings or evening.
  • Limited space is available for assessment (14 slots at a time), and slots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • You should plan to arrive no later than 8:00 am for morning registration/testing and no later than 4:00 pm for evening registration/testing.
  • Students arriving late for registration may not be admitted to testing.
  • There is a $25 registration fee. Students who bring a referral form from the SNAP program will not have to pay the initial registration fee--that fee will be covered by SNAP.
  • Classes operate on monthly sessions; students will be placed in the next available session.

*No registration on school holidays or in-service days.
